Kwasniewski Suffers Damage, Leaves Vegas with 24th-Place Finish
LAS VEGAS (March 9, 2014) - Dylan Kwasniewski came to Las Vegas looking to make his first-career NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) start at Las Vegas Motor Speedway (LVMS) a memorable one. Kwasniewski and his No. 31 Rockstar Energy team started the weekend by earning their secondtop-10 qualifying effort of the year, placing the Turner Scott Motorsports (TSM) machine eighthon the board after three sessions in NASCAR's new "knock out" qualifying format. Kwasniewski was able to keep his Chevy Camaro in the top 15 during the first third of the race, but suffered a setback and hit the wall on lap 70, resulting in heavy rear-end damage to the Rockstar Camaro. However, Kwasniewski and his crew never gave up and crossed the finish line in the 24th position.
Shortly after the green flag dropped at LVMS, the field quickly jockeyed for position as passing was at premium during the 200-lap race. By lap 10, Kwasniewski had settled into 14th position and was content learning his way around the 1.5-mile oval. After trying several lines, the young rookie was eventually running lap times as quick as the leaders halfway through his first fuel run. The Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender was scored in the 13th position, one lap down when he made his first green-flag pit stop on lap 47. During the green-flag pit stop, crew chief Pat Tryson called Kwasniewski down pit road for four tires, fuel and a track-bar adjustment for the No. 31 Rockstar Energy Chevy. As green-flag pit stops were beginning to cycle through, the first caution of the day came out on Lap 56, causing a few competitors to go a lap down. After an extended caution by NASCAR to ensure that scoring was correct, Kwasniewski restarted in the 13th position, one lap down on lap 69.
One lap after the restart, Kwasniewski was battling for position and made contact with another competitor, causing him to hit the wall in Turn 3, bringing out the second caution of the day on Lap 70. After gathering himself, Kwasniewski brought the Rockstar Energy Chevy down pit road to the attention of his crew. After working diligently to ensure Kwasniewski didn't lose another lap, the TSM crew was able to repair the damage suffered during the accident and Kwasniewski restarted in the 21st position, still only one lap down. Three laps after the restart, Kwasniewski radioed to his crew that he had a left-rear tire rub. Not taking any chances, Tryson called the young rookie down pit road to repair the damage. During the pit stop, NASCAR penalized the No. 31 team for speeding entering pit road. After serving a pass-through penalty, Kwasniewski was scored in the 30th position, four laps down.
Determined not to give up at his hometown track, Kwasniewski continued to learn his way 1.5-mile oval and worked his way into the 23rd position when the third caution of the day came out on lap 144. During the caution, Kwasniewski stayed out on the track, took the wave around and gained one of his laps back, restarting in 23rd. Kwasniewski would continue to battle following the restart and would ultimately bring the Rockstar Energy Chevy home in the 24th position.
"I have to thank my guys at Turner Scott Motorsports for working so hard this weekend on this Rockstar Energy Chevrolet," Kwasniewski said. "This was not the weekend we were hoping for, but my guys never gave up and we continued to battle all weekend. This was a huge learning experience for me and I think it will only help us as we move along during the season. I appreciate all of my family and friends who came out to support me. It was great being back home in Las Vegas, but I am looking forward to putting this weekend behind me and moving on to Bristol next weekend."
The NNS next heads to Bristol Motor Speedway for the Drive To Stop Diabetes 300 on Saturday, March 15 at 1:00 p.m. EDT on ESPN.
